Refractive surgery

As an alternative to wearing glasses or contact lenses, people who have a refractive error (nearsightedness and/or astigmatism), may want to consider eximer laser (Lasik), a highly succesful and safe intervention.

The LASIK procedure is able to correct refractive error, by changing the shape of the cornea, which changes the way the eye focuses internally.

Approved by the F.D.A. for use, the eximer laser has been recognized as exceptionally safe and effective. The F.D.A. clinical trials showed a significant improvement on vision in 100% of patients with mild to moderate myopia.

The last few years the technology in refractive surgery has improved tremendeously. The newest addition is the latest laser : the FEMTOSECONDE.

With this newest Femtoseconde laser the « flap » in the cornea is made with microbulbs of gaz instead of with a micro keratome (a small robot equiped with a metal surgical blade) as was the case in traditional lasik surgery. Performing Lasik with the Femtoseconde laser has numerous advantages : more precision, quicker, absence of complication with the creation of the flap, quicker recuperation of vision.

Off course, Dr. Bouzouaya uses for his refractive surgeries the lastest Femtoseconde laser.

If you are dependent on glasses or contact lenses and if you would like to have clean unaided vision, refractive surgery, can eliminate the need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

Am I a candidate for refractive surgery?

You may be a good candidate for refractive surgery if:

  • you are 21 years or older and have a stable prescription for at least 1 year.
  • both your eyes are healthy.
  • are within treatment parameters (as determined by the consultant ophtalmologic surgeon at your assessment visit).
  • are in good general health.
  • wear glasses or contact lenses for distant vision.

The consultation

Your first step, is to be assessed by Dr. Bouzouya himself. He will perform a comprehensive ophthalmic assessment that will include taking computerized measurements of your refractive error, pupil size and corneal thickness, and a computerized map of the cornea.

Dr. Bouzouaya will discuss with you:

  • What the risks, benefits and alternatives to the surgery are.
  • What you should expect before, during and after surgery.
  • Statistics, risks and complications.
  • Any questions you may have.
